Should You Buy a New iPhone? Let’s Explore:
This week Apple launched 3 new iPhones: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. They also dropped the iPhone X from their offerings so if you were hoping to snag one of those at a discounted price it won’t be an option. Which makes sense considering the new XS is the same housing. They also slashed the pricing on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7. More about why you might consider buying the iPhone 8 at the bottom of this article. For the record: The iPhone 7 is a HARD PASS and won’t be worth much for trade-in in 6 months.
Let’s Check the Specs:
iPhone XS: 5.8-inch OLED display; 64GB, 256GB or 512GB storage; gold, space gray, and silver finishes; A12 Bionic chip; 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras; 7MP front-facing “TrueDepth” camera. Ranging from $999 to $1,349.
iPhone XS Max: 6.5-inch OLED display. Everything else the iPhone XS has. Ranging from $1,099 to $1,449.
iPhone XR: 6.1-inch “Liquid Retina” LCD display; 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB storage; red, yellow, white, coral, black, and blue finishes; A12 Bionic chip; 12MP wide-angle camera; 7MP front-facing “TrueDepth” camera. Ranging from $749 to $899.
The XR is Apple’s attempt at an affordable option. The tech differences are mid and top tier storage options are not as plentiful as the XS, the camera is the single wide angle lens, and the display is not 3D touch. Where Apple cuts costs is in the housing. The XR is aluminum but colorful and the glass is LCD v the OLED you’ll get with the XS.
|iPhone XR||iPhone XS||iPhone XS Max|
|5.94″ x 2.98″ x .33″||5.65″ x 2.79″ x .30″||6.20″ x 3.05″ x .30″|
|6.84 ounces||6.24 ounces||7.34 ounces|
It’s important to note all 3 iPhones are their own unique size. The screen is edge-to-edge making the XS screen the same size you’ll get on an iPhone 8 PLUS. Which is huge and I’ll deal with Face ID for a larger screen. Sure, I’ll miss the home button but I’m over it. The XS Max is massive – nearly the size of my iPad Mini. So if you’re needing a screen that size I’m guessing you have very deep pockets (both physically and financially speaking). Where I feel Apple missed the mark was making the XR larger than the XS. It’s already heavier because of it’s housing but the added dimensions makes this a tough phone to slide in and out of your jeans pocket and for me it’s size is a deal breaker.
Let’s Talk Bells & Whistles:
All of these upgrades are by comparison to the iPhone X. So if you’re currently reading this on a prehistoric iPhone you should know the XS, XS Max, and XR are the most advanced iPhone ever created and it will literally blow you away. The highlights for all 3 iPhones are as follows:
- Increased Water Coverage; now your phone should survive going for a swim up to 2 meters deep for 30 minutes.
- New A12 Bionic Chip (as mentioned above) is 30% faster than the iPhone X bringing you the faster processing in apps, in the background, longer battery life, faster response to Face ID, and better photos. I could go on about it being the first ever 7 nanometer chip but most people won’t care or notice.
- Camera Improvements; now allow for better selfies (maybe we won’t be so shocked when we open the camera and it’s front facing ha!), Face Detection improved with enhanced Facial Landmarking, faster sensor and zero shutter lag in Smart HDR mode, and Bokeh improvements now allow you to adjust the depth of field after taking the photo. Note the XR is a single wide angled lens but they somehow managed to make portrait mode an option for the XR too. Photographers rejoice these improvements were for you!
- Recording Improvements; 2x faster sensor and 4 new microphones can record sound in stereo now.
- Dual SIM Capability; one designated SIM card tray and one e SIM allowing you to add a second phone number. This could be useful for business lines or traveling internationally.
- Bluetooth 5.0; not even mentioned in the keynote but upgrading the bluetooth to 5.0 will allow multiple bluetooth connections to be paired and synced at the same time. In other words, 2 sets of headphones could be listening to the music on one iPhone at the same time.
Now… Should You Buy a New iPhone?
Are you rich? Then sure buy it. Do you already own the iPhone X? Then probably not… you’re not getting all that much hardware wise. Sure the A12 Chip is faster but will you notice it in your everyday use? Likely not. Even as a gamer you’re better off buying a cheaper gaming device like a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation Vita. When Argmented Reality has infiltrated our lives then I’d say the A12 would be worth the money in your case.
Do you own the iPhone 8/8Plus? This one is tricky. You probably don’t need it. The XS’ dimensions are worth considering and if you’re not up for dropping $$$$ on the XS the XR would be a happy upgrade. Especially if you’re using the iPhone 8 Plus. I mean this way you get Face ID and animoji – that’s worth considering the trade in. It’s also worth noting this is probably the last chance you’ll get to actually get some sort of money for the value of your trade in.
Do you own any other iPhone? Without hesitation, upgrade already people. If you like to hold onto your phone for multiple years, go all in and get the XS. It will give you your 3-4 years you’re use to. Which if on a payment plan will give you 2 years or so payment free. The XR is a reasonable alternative but I think if you’re keeping the phone for 3 or 4 years you’re going to want the more durable housing.
Have a dying phone and don’t want to drop four figures on a new iPhone? That’s where the iPhone 8 comes in. It’s truly affordable and if you’re still using an iPhone 6s or older you’ll appreciate the faster chip and better camera. And if you’re not open to change – you’ll still have your home button with touch ID.
I just can’t make a case for the iPhone 7. Just don’t waste your money. And that’s a wrap! Apple Announced release dates for the new Operating Systems set to launch mid September. More on that next week!
